How do you stay on track with a hectic schedule?
NICOLE: I have testing equipment in all of my bags and in my car. This helps me avoid any logistical problems of not having my supplies accessible. However, honestly, I had to make a commitment to test often to stay in good control of my diabetes. It is a struggle and many times I don't feel like doing it, but I know that it is necessary for my life and lifestyle. I set short-term goals for myself. For instance, I have a daily goal of 4 perfect glucose readings out of 6-8.
Diet and exercise, meanwhile, require a lot of flexibility. I wear an insulin pump which helps me tremendously. It simply provides me with flexibility and freedom in my lifestyle. It makes me feel like I have a normal life – like I don’t have diabetes. Concerning diet, I have learned that I don't ever have to be restricted to a menu....you can always request special meals or food that is without toppings, etc. With exercise, my advice is move more every day. Even if you can only do a little each day, do it. If you wait for everything to be perfect, that day will never come. I exercise anywhere I can. Many times you can find me walking— in airports, shopping malls or hotel stairwells.
